“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

This self-explanatory quote by American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Roth, sums up the importance of a sound, healthy body. With hectic schedules and increasingly sedentary lifestyle, we often tend to stretch our body to its limit. Small changes in our lifestyle can help our bodies to stay fit and in turn, help maintain both our physical and mental health.

To get a fit, lean body, you don’t necessarily need to diet and stay in the gym all day. Here are five smart tips to lose weight without dieting:

1. Get adequate Sleep

If you’re trying to lose those extra kilos, hitting the sack is as important as hitting the gym. A research by University of Columbia found that people who get less than seven hours of sleep per night tend to gain more weight, and find it difficult to shed the same over time. Sleep deprivation leads to changes in levels of hormones such as cortisol and insulin, which makes weight loss even more challenging. In a way, your body heals when you are asleep. So go ahead and catch those forty winks!

2. Don’t skip your breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you’re asleep, your body has been without food and water for at least 8 hours.  Therefore, in order to maintain your blood glucose levels and metabolism, it is vital to start the day with a nutritious breakfast. A protein rich, whole grain meal can set the tone for an energetic day and help you lose weight.

3. Eat Fruits before meals

Ideally, fruits should be taken on an empty stomach. Eating a fruit before your meals helps detoxify your system, fills you up and controls overeating during mealtimes. They’re high in fiber and help you feeling fuller for a longer time. They also help you get your daily dose of vitamins and minerals. Plus, they’re delicious!

 4. More water, less sweetened drinks

About 60% of our body is water. Therefore, drinking enough water holds the key to a healthy body. Not only does it keep you hydrated, it also keeps you full so that you avoid snacking. Stay clear of packaged drinks, as they are extremely sweetened and high in calories. A healthier option would be 100% fruit juices or low calorie vegetable juices.

 5.  Go the extra mile

Walking is considered to be the most effective way to lose weight. Make sure you walk around 10000 steps on a daily basis. A pedometer can help count your steps and keep you motivated.

As we can see, dieting is not the only way to lose weight. By making small changes to your daily life, you can enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Remember, it’s about how you eat and not how much you eat.
