Salacia Oblonga is an ayurvedic herbfound in Indian subcontinent which has been traditionally used in treating type2 diabetes patients. The ayurvedic practitioners in India and Sri Lanka havebeen effectively using this herb for hundreds of years to keep diabetes undercontrol.
A new study at Ohio State Universityreports that, researchers gave extracts of the herb Salacia Oblonga to 39healthy adults, and the results were promising. The largest dose of the herbextract decreased blood glucose levels by 23 percent, respectively. The studyappears in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association
Salacia, the herb, binds to intestinal enzymes that break down carbohydrates in thebody. These enzymes, called alpha-glucosidases, turn carbohydrates intoglucose, the sugar that circulates throughout the body. If the enzyme binds tothe herbal extract rather than to a carbohydrate, then less glucose gets intothe blood stream, resulting in lowered blood glucose and insulin levels.
